HANDS-ON BOILER OPERATOR TRAINING
2.1 Continuing Education Units

Course Overview:

This 3-day class follows content as listed in our Basic Boiler Operations program but focuses on the "how and why" to safely operate a boiler. Fundamentals are covered including types of boilers, and design and components, such as valves, tubes, fans, dampers, compressors, pumps, regulators, as well as temperature, pressure and water level controls.

Besides the fundamentals, students learn about boiler water pathways, the principles of combustion and thermodynamics and their relationship to optimal boiler performance. Boiler procedures, safety, and water chemistry are also discussed. The class then shifts gears to boiler operations.

Class topics are burner management systems, and how to properly maintain boiler water chemistry to avoid scaling, pitting, and other potential problems. Start ups and shut down sequences are discussed in detail, and students learn proper operational techniques including daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly optimal boiler maintenance practices. Combustion testing, inspection procedures, and appropriate boiler record keeping are also covered. Students learn many valuable boiler operational techniques including the best ways to achieve the highest possible efficiency rate while achieving low Nox emissions, how to reduce fuel costs, and how to properly maintain and extend the life of the boiler.

This class features hands-on experience with boiler equipment and auxiliary systems so students can apply theory learned in the classroom on the job.

Course includes text book, handouts, manual and continuing education units (CEU's).
