ADVANCED PLANT OPERATIONS
2.1 Continuing Education Units

Course Overview:

This 3-day course will cover basic, intermediate and advanced power plant training. Although topics are similar to those covered in the basic course, this class goes into depth on each subject. Equations will be given for calculations, with a description of step-by-step procedures to follow when solving boiler problems. Understanding the calculations used in the actual design and construction of boilers will give the operator a better understanding of the principles of boiler operation. Students will learn how to conquer present boiler problems and how to prevent new ones from arising. Students will gain a thorough understanding of operational and maintenance practices. Case studies and typical boiler operation problems are discussed along with applications for improvement.

Decision support tools already developed by the U.S. Department of Energy will be demonstrated and they include: The Steam Scoping Tool, Steam System Assessment Tool (SSAT), and 3E Plus. Using these software tools participants will learn how to identify and implement steam system upgrade opportunities of an operational and structural nature. Production, reliability, and efficiency benefits will be highlighted as they relate to a variety of upgrades.

    General Presentation Outline includes:
  1. Introduction to Steam Systems
  2. The Steam Scoping Tool
  3. Boilers
  4. Combustion
  5. Controls
  6. Heat Recovery
  7. Flue Gas Treatment
